History and Analysis

1212-1218 Bushwick Avenue is a row of four two-and-a-half-story rowhouses located between Jefferson Avenue and Hancock Street, all three bays wide with raised stoops on the right side of the front facade. While it is known that these structures were constructed in brownstone with tin roofs, all four are now covered in vinyl siding with much of the front and side facade ornament removed, so it is difficult to determine their original architectural style. The cornice is in tact at both 1212 and 1214, and the original window locations remain at 1214-1218, suggesting that they may have been built in the Gothic Revival style. These structures were built for $2,800 each in 1887 as a speculative development venture by M. Holt who resided at 928 Bushwick Avenue.

According to the United States Census of 1900, there were multiple large, multi-generational families without servants living in each of these rowhouses. Most residents were born in the United States with parents born in the United States, Germany, Ireland, or Sweden. A large majority of residents were stenographers. Most of the families owned their apartments.
