History and Analysis
1185-1193 Bushwick Avenue is a row of five three-story brick filled frame tenement built for $4,400 each in 1891, designed by Theobald M. Engelhardt. The original owner and builder, Philip Steingotter who resided at 1354 Bushwick Avenue, also developed 1144-1146 Bushwick Avenue in 1889, and 1180-84 Bushwick Avenue in 1903. All structures have been highly altered, and they are completely clad in stone carved veneer siding (1185 and 1187 Bushwick Avenue) and vinyl siding (1191 and 1193 Bushwick Avenue). 1187 and 1191 Bushwick Avenue retain original wood cornices, however both structures are abandoned and are in undesirable conditions.
