History and Analysis

1007-1009 and 1015-1019 Hancock Street are two sets of two connected townhouses between Bushwick Avenue and Broadway, all three stories with three bays and mansard roofs. All four structures have heavily altered front facades with vinyl or asphalt siding. Although the actual date of construction is unknown, these are some of the few buildings which appear on the 1886 city maps, so it can be speculated that they are some of the oldest structures in the area.

According to the United States Census of 1900, there was a medium-sized family living in each townhouse. These residents were a mix of owners and renters, and some had servants. Most of the residents were born in the United States with parents from the United States, England, and Ireland. The occupations included a mix of middle class professions, such as a lawyer, a superintendent, a director, and traders.
